Figure 1.-- A local J. C. Penney's store placed an adverisement in the Salt Lake Tribune (November 3, 1934), page 10 for various items, including waist union suits for boys and girls. They were available in sizes from ages 2 to 12. This was the most popular style of underwear for children of both genders between the ages of 2 and 12. Thesecwaist union suits usually made in four different styles with three different leg lengths--brief, knee length, and ankle length, with either short sleeves or long sleeves. There were also two different necklines (high for boys or low for girls). The boy in the illustration is wearing the brief leg style with short sleeves while the girl has the warmer ankle-length, long sleeves model.

All the suits combined underwear (top and bottom in one with drop seat buttoned to the waist line in the rear) with an underwaist with taped on buttons for the support of trousers or skirts and metal garter tabs at the sides so that hose supporters could be attached. The ad text read, "It's Grand to Find Such Cotton Waist Unions at this low price! Sizes 2 to 12. 49 cents. Of cream-color cotton, rayon-striped and trimmed, with all the necessary "outer garment" buttons for comfort. Pin tubes for hose supporters. Drop seat. 3 styles of leg, arm, neckline!"
