American Mail Order Catalogs with Boys Clothings: Lane Bryant Individual School Suits (1935)

Figure 1.--Lane Bryant offered a range of different outfits referred to as suits in its Fall-Winter catalog. Primarily they are sailor suits and shorts sets with a suit and sweater combination. Here is a shorts set and suit. Note the suit is also being worm without the jacket as a shorts set.

Lane Bryant offered on formal sack suit and an Eton suit done as a sailor suit. The sack suit is done as a double-breasted suit. Suits for school were not as common in the 1930s as they had been in the 1920s. Another example of a gradual shift to more informal styles. This was a style I have not noted before. There are two other sailor suits, both short and long pants. This seems a more prominent presentation than we have noted in the actual photographic record. There are also short sets (shorts with coordinated shirts) and the suit can be worn as a shorts set as well. We also note sweater sets with include the shirts as well and thus can can be worn as shorts sets. The sweaters are pullovers and a shoilder fastening style. All these outfits are resented as suitable for schoolwear. Some mothers sent boys to school in short pants in the 1930s, but others chose knickers or even long oants, especially when the weather got cold. Here mothers were offered a wide selection of styles, but mostly short pants outfits.

Suits

Lane Bryant offered on formal sack suit and an Eton suit done as a sailor suit. This was a style I have not noted before. The sack suit is done as a double-breasted suit. Suits for school were not as common in the 1930s as they had been in the 1920s. Another example of a gradual shift to more informal styles. Notice both are also shown without the jackets meaning they could be worn to school as shorts sets.

Sailor Suits

In addition to the Eton-style sailor suit, there are two other sailor suits, both short and long pants. This seems a more prominent presentation than we have noted in the actual photographic record. We note younger primary (elementary) boys wearing sailor suits to school in the 1930s, but usually only one or two boys in any class. Sailor suits could also have been worn as a boy's best outfit. The styling on each suit is basically traditional, although the Eton uit is a little unusual. Also notice the embroidered design on the front of the short pants sailot suit. Both the short and long pants suit come with lanyard and tin whistle.

Short Sets

There are also short sets (shorts with coordinated shirts) and the suit sets can be worn as a shorts set as well. The same is true of the sweater sets. The shorts sets are shown being worn with ties. We are not sure how common neck ties were at school. Our general assessment is that they were beconing much less cimmon by the mid-1930s at most primary schools. These shorts sets became increasingly popular and shorts and long sets were widely worn in the 1940s, somerimes with suspenders rather than button-on styling. We note color options

Sweater Sets

We also note sweater sets with include the shirts as well and thus can can be worn as shorts sets. The sweaters are pullovers and a shoulder fastening style. Sweaters were very commonly worn to school. We think pullovers were especially common. We have not noted many examples of the shoulder fastening style in the photographic record. Notice that the shirt with the shoulder-fastening sweater is done with a stylish Eton collar.

Pants

All these outfits are resented as suitable for schoolwear. Some mothers sent boys to school in short pants in the 1930s, but others chose knickers or even long pants, especially when the weather got cold. Here mothers were offered a wide selection of styles, but mostly short pants outfits. Notice that many of the pants are lined.
