Wards Boxer Sets (United States, 1960s)

Figure 1.--We notice a Montgomery Ward catalog page offering summer cotton boxer sets. This was a cominaion of coordinated shirts and boxer shorts. It was a casual or play style. The colors shown for the noys are fairly muted, blue, broen, green, and grey. Brighhter colors were done for the girls. The colors were coordinated with striped T-shirt or collared pattern shirt tops. They are thus called sets like the button-on styles previously popular. The shorts were done in poplin and bar tacked at the seams. They were available in sizes 3-6 years. At the bottom of the page are Skips, a popular sneaker style during the 1960s and 70s worn by both boys and girls.

We have found some advertisements and catalog items which we think date to the 1960s, but cannot identify the specific year. One of the values of catalogs is that they are dated sources. We have found, catalog pages, however, with useful information that are not dated. We usually can identify the decade, but of course this is not fool proof. Perhaps HBC readers can help with the dating. We notice a Montgomery Ward catalog page offering summer cotton boxer sets. This was a cominaion of coordinated shirts and boxer shorts.
