School Chronology: Unknown Schools: The 1930s

Figure 1.-- We can usually figure out countries where photographic images originated, at least for the major countries. Here is one that has us baffled (figure 1). The one thing we know is that it was taken during the mid-1930s. We even know that it was taken during 1936 or 37. So the when the photograph is taken is the one thing that we are sure of, although the specific yeat is not as easy to identify as one might seem. The teacher has written "Dec 7, 1936, Saturda" on the blackboad. The script looks rather American. The first problem with that Dec. 7, 1936 was a Sunday, not a Saturday. More important that that, the countries we might have guessed based on the Children an English lanugage (America, Canada, and England). would not have been dressed as lightly like the children here in December.

Most school images we can identify. But we have also found images that have proven confusing or that we just can not identify, much like the unidentified boy wearing a smock in the school shown on the previous page (figure 1). Thus we have an unknown 1930s school page. Here we urge readers with insights to offer to add their views.

We can usually figure out countries where photographic images originated, at least for the major countries. Now Autralia and New Zealand is a possibility, but H-bar shorts were not very common in either country or for that matter anywhere except Germany and central Europe. Another date appears on the back May 7. 1937. Again children would not have dressed like that in northern Europe or Canada during May. It was justto cold. I supose May is possible in the southern United States. Just what kind of group this was is another mystery. There are only six children, three boys and three girls. They look to be about 6 years old. That is way to small to be a regular class, but we are not sure about what kind of special group it is. The children look healthy. But they are in some kind of institutionl care. Mothers would not sent the childen to school so uniformily dressed and while we have seen American children without shirts, usually with bibfront overalls. We have never seen a whole group without shirts like this. Based only on the clothes we might guess Germany, although the footwear and socks looks more American. Another notable aspect is how modern the children's desks are, lthough they still have inm wells. We think think this rules out Germany, although the decorations on the wall look vaguely German. All in all, we would guess some kind of state institution, somewhere in the southern United States, perhaps some kind of New Deal effort for the younger chilren of migrant farm workers. If readers have any other ideas, let us know.
