English 1960s School Uniform Trends: Types of Schools

Figure 1.--This primary school class was photographed in during 1960-61. The school did not require a uniform. The girls wear dresses. The boys wear uniform-type garments. All of the boys wear short trousers. I do not know if this was a school requirement.

The private sector was a small percentage of Engklish schools. They have powerfully affected the state system whicj obly cane bout in the late-19th century. Most of the school garments that became popular in France, cane out of the private schools in the 19th century. Significant changes in school uniforms occurred at both private and secondary schools during the 1960s. Changes in the primary schools were most notable as new schools began requiring uniforms. Boys at the significantly exapanded secondary schools in the 1960s complained about strict uniform regulations--especially related to caps and short pants.

State System

Primary Schools

State elementary boys in the 1960s increasingly wore uniforms. Not all primary schools adopted uniforms, but many did. We note that the children, especially the boys, at schools without uniforms, often worn uniform-type garments. Short pants and kneesocks were very common. Mot gils wore dresses. Many of those schools adopted short pamts uniforms. This was a major change for primary age children. Prep schools, essentially, private primary schools, continued to be a bastion of school uniforms, many requiring boys to wear caps, blazers, short pants and kneesocks. Some prep schools began allowing the older boys to wear long pants.

Secondary Schools

Secondary schools, both secondary moderns and grammar schools did require uniforms. The grammar schools tended to place more of an emphasis on uniforms than the secondary moderns. The younger boys at these schools at the beginning of the decade had to wear caps, short pants, and knee socks, but by the end of the decade this had become much less common. Often the schools were quite strict about uniforms, but given the increasing objections of the boys, loosened the regulations. Private schools continued to have very elaborate uniforms. Quite a few continued to insist that the junior boys wear shorts.

Private Schools

School uniform garments were primarily developed in the private sector. Uniforms at first were were only required in private schools. The major exception was the grammar schools an kind of school midway between the state and private sector. The grammar schools adopted the curriuculum, methods, and uniforms of the public (elite private secondary boarding) schools. The public schools had century long origins. The preparatory schools are much more recent origins dating to the 19th century. And out of this came the peaked caps, boaters, blazers, ties, Eton collars, trimmed sweaters, and trimmed knee socks. The shortpants were more recent and more of a popular fashion as were chool sandals. These were all popular styles worn at the prepschools and commonly the younger boys at the public schools. The blazers could ber very colorful. Some schools had grey suits. This all varied from school to school. Short pants were very common, usually grey to comtrast with the coloful blazers. The socks were also usually grey. School sandals were very common for the younger boys. The styles can be seen to various degrees influencing school wear iun the state schools. Private schools for several centuries were foir boys. Only in the 19th century did we begin to see giurls' schools. And theu adopminated the styles worn by the boys except for caps and pants.
