English School Uniform Garments: Scarves

Figure 1.--Here we see an English family on the a steamer headed to Guuerney. It is dated Auguest 26, 1925. Notice how warmly they are dressed in August. The boy weas a school cp and scrg. Notice how bulky it is meaning hat it was very long.

We see many boys wearing scarves to school during the winter. We think it was somewhat less common for girls, although that needs to be confirmed. Boys attending private schools usually had scarves done in the school colors. Some were rather long, much longer than actually needed. Some boys slung them over their shoulders. We are not sure about the 19th century, but school scarves seem very common in the first half of the 20th century. We are not sure why they have declined in popularity. Perhaps they came to be seen by some as flaunting ones attendace at a private or grammar) selective secondary school. The photographic record probably does not actually register the actual prevalence. This was because winter photographs are not as common as summer photographs and studio portaits usually are taken after winter outerwear is removed.
