A HBC reader writes, "Notice the garter showing from the boy's gray sock." Actually the garter would have been under the cuff of his turn-over-top knee socks. A few schools wore them with flashes, but that was not real common. The white item you see here is a name tag. Getting the right socks back to the right boy from the laundry is a bit of a challenge. This of course because of the uniforms, everyone wore the same clothes. Mum had to sew on those tags to every item. The schools often provided guidance as to wear they should be sewed on, but mums did not always follow that guidance. Usually they did not show, but they sometimes did show on the socks, often because boys did not pat attention when they cuffed their socks or if boys had the pain kknee socks that were elastiiczed and did not have turn-over-top socks. Sewing on these names tags was quite an undertaking as it had to be done on everything including handkerchiefs and socks.
