Individual French Schools: Collège Stanislas -- Uniform

Collège Stanislas
Figure 1.--Here we see the militay uniform introduced atr the Collège Stanislas (1870s). The grop seems o be a marching band. The portrait is undated, but we know it was taken in the 20h century, probably about 1910 before World War I. It was a Maison de la Bonne Press glass slide and they only began producing Magic Lattern glass slides sldes in 1896. The mlitary uniform was dicontinued after the War a public attitudes toward the militry shifted strongly.

We do not have much information about uniforms at the school. We do not even know if there was a uniform when the school was founded or during much of the 19th century. After France's catastrophic defeat in the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71), military uniform were introduced. The new Third Republic sought what was seen as a stronger national character along with a more powerful military. This included education reforms. The Government promoted school smocks designed to obscure social-class differences in primary schools. This became very common throughout France. Many other schools, especially secondary schools adopted military uniforms. Here we see the Stan uniform during the late-19th and early-20th centuries. The uniform was based on the French Army uniform. Many of the boys here after the Germans invaded Belgium and France (1914) were almost certainly called up to fight World War (1914-18). The school portrait on the previos page is not a shool uiform, but the boys' 1950s First Communn suits (figure 1). Students at the school today do not wear uinforms. We are no surewhen the school uniform requrement was dropped.
