German School Book Bags / Satchels: Prevalence

Figure 1.--We see countless portraits and snapshots of the children with these satchels. Both boys and girls had them. From the photographic record it would seem that a large percentage had them. We note group photographs in which virtually all the children seem to have these satchels. Here we see boys on their first day of school. Notice the different depths and detailing of the satchels. Notice te different ioutfits, including different knee sicks.

A graet many German school children had these satchels in the early 20th century. We see countless portraits and snapshots of the children with these satchels. Both boys and girls had them. From the photographic record it would seem that a large percentage had them. We note group photographs in which virtually all the children seem to have these satchels. Of course, even the children who do not have satchels in the photographs, may have had them at school. Many of the children photographed for the ritual first day of school portrait had these satchels which appear to be leather and worn over the shoulders. Given that they were made in leather, they must have been realtively expensive. Thus we would guess thast some children from poor families might not have had them. We are not sure what, if anything the schools did for disadvantaged children. A German reader tells us, "All children had these sachels, up to about 12 to 14 years of age. They were not so expensive (of course, there were differences). For poorer families some of the relatives or a family in the neighbourhood had one at home stored in the attic. The sachels were commonly passed on from one generation to the next. Made from leather they were practically indestructable even in the hands of boys. Perhaps on the side a seam had to be repaired, but this could easily be done by a shoemaker."
