Individual German Schools: Altenau Primary School

Figure 1.-- Here we see the primary school of Altenau, a village in the district of Goslar, in Lower Saxony. The school portrait we have is from 1927. It seems to be a typical small village chool. We can't tell much about the schoolfrom the details in the background. The age range of te children suggests that it was quite a small school. Most of the girls wear pinafores. We know pre-school boys also wore pinafors at the time. It was much lss common for boys to wear pinafores to school.

Here we see the primary school of Altenau, a village in the district of Goslar, in Lower Saxony. There is also an Altena in Bavaria. The school portrait we have is from 1927. Most of the girls wear pinafores. We know pre-school boys also wore pinafors at the time. It was much lss common for boys to wear pinafores to school. None of theboys wear sailor suits, but one girl wears a sailor-style dress. We have no indication about the season, but some children are wearing coats or heavy jackets. Almost all children are wearing boots, however in the front row a girl wears strap shoes; a girl and a boy are barefoot. The boy wears also a garment that seems to cover only the ankles. The image is not very clear. But in looking at it carefully we think that we see Loferi just below his knees. (They are partshly covered by his knee pants. Loferl are like socks without the foot-part. They are also called "Stutzen". His jacket looks like some traditional costume-style for southern Germany or Bavaria. We thought there were bands at his ankles, but in looking again we think the bands might be the colored leg ends of white-colored long underwear. The bandsmay be the hem of the long underwear legs. This is very unusual. We do not normally se German boys wearing short pants or knee pns with long underwear unless the underwear legs are covered by long stockings.
