Hermsdorf School (1929)

Figure 1.--We note a 1929 class photo taken in chilly weather at Hermsdorf School. Notice that the short trousers are rather longer than shorts worn in the the 1930s and 1940s, almost like knee trousers. The children seem to be about 12 years old--upper primary school, apparently. No 6 wears a sailor suit with beige or light tan long stockings. No. 8 has a rather chic sweater-type knitted top with a belt on top and checked short trousers with black long stockings. No. 16 is wearing long underwear under the rather wrinkled tan stockings, wrinkled because his supporters are too loose or have lost their elasticity. The teacher is rather sportily dressed in breeches with checked knee socks. The girls of course mostly wear long stockings. Put your cursor on the imaage to see the rest of the class. A reader writes, "Not sure but it appears that boy 7 and 16 have baggy stockings because were wearing long underwear that was not pulled down all the way. Do you see the outline of the ankle bands on their calves?

We note a 1929 class photo taken in chilly weather at Hermsdorf School. Notice that the short trousers are rather longer than shorts worn in the the 1930s and 1940s, almost like knee trousers. The children seem to be about eleven years old--upper primary school, apparently. No 6 wears a sailor suit with beige or light tan long stockings. No. 8 has a rather chic sweater-type knitted top with a belt on top (thus having no purpose) and checked short trousers with black long stockings. No. 16 is wearing long underwear under the rather wrinkled tan stockings, wrinkled because his supporters are too loose or have lost their elasticity. The teacher is rather sportily dressed in breeches with checked knee socks. The girls of course mostly wear long stockings. We have just learned that this photo may show the children in the year of their confirmation (even though they aren't dressed for the church ceremony). This would suggest that the children are 12-12 years old. Age 13 is the almost invariable age for confirmations in both the Roman Catholic and Lutheran churches at the time. Notice the girl sitting on the far left front row (I assume the skirt makes her a girl and not a boy) has a side part and short hair (who knows maybe she wears a pony tail we cannot see). This is an indication about how hard it is to judge gender without context.
