FSM Education: Modern Schools



Figure 1.--The photo was taken in a 5th grade class at a school on Falalop Island, Ulithi Atoll. Ulithi was the site of an enormous U.S. Navy anchorage and forward base during the Pacific War. Micronesia enjoys a very warm tropical climate. The pupils wear their everyday clothing, i.e. loincloths. Some of them wear the traditional vegetable loincloths, others wear cotton loincloths. In some lower grades a few children still attend without any clothing a all.

As the United Nations Trustee, the United States placed emphasis on educating the islands' children for the first time. A major problem was finding teachers. There were virtually no islanders with the needed educational levels. The U.S. Peace Corps provided a cadre of teachers (1960s). schools were at first very basic. Now all the islands with any significant population have primary schools and the larger islnds have secondary schools. The schools are now modern, well equipped facilities. Now Micronesians are filling the teaching positiuons. The FSM Micronesia as a result as a high literacy rate. School attendance is compulsory through the 8th grade. There are also private schools, including the Pohnpei Agricultural and Trade School (PATS) and Xavier High School on Chuuk. Until recently there were no tertiary educationn institution on the FSM. Interested studented can attend the College of Micronesia, the University of Guam, and other U.S. colleges through Pell grants and other U.S. education programs. Most FSM Government officials are graduates of American unversities. The College of Micronesia in Pohnpei is now opening a new campus constructed with US assistance, and is the beneficiary of Land Grant status through the U.S. Department of Agriculture,
