Welsh Education: Garments

Figure 1.--This photograph of an unidentified state primary in Wales gives a good example of popular school garments for younger children. Sandals were so common tha they bgcame know an chool sandals and were commonly worn by both boys and girl. The photograph is ijdted, but was probaly tajen avout 1960. The children look to be about 6-years old.

As far as we can tell, Welsh school garments are essentially the same as those worn in England. This was the case at least by the time that school photography began to appear after the mid-19th century and we think probanly earlier. We do not yet have many Welsh school garment pages but the web section is costantly growing. We see the see the same headwear, blzers, ties, shirts, jumpers (sweaters), pants, hosiery, and footwear. As in England, short pants were very common un the 20th century. We do have a page on mortarboard caps. They were worn at private preparatory and public schools, but not at state schools which did not have uniforms. These were the same as those worn in English schools during the late-19th and early-20th centuries. We also see the same modern styles. Unless the photograph is identified, it is impossible to tell the difference between the garments worn in Wales and England. This of course makes itdifficult to archive Welsh images.
