School Mortar Boards: Wales

mortarboard caps
Figure 1.--Welsh fashions, including schoolwear, by the 19th century were virtually indestinguishable to those wirn in England. This includes bith the fashions worn in state schools as well as the uniforms worn at public schools. Thus we not mortarboard hats worn at private schools in the late 19th century just as they were worn in England. We believecthe style and chronology are just the same as at English schools. The boy here was photographed in Newton, North Wales. We do not know what schoolnwas located in or near Newton. The CDV portrait is undatedm but looks like it may have been taken about 1870. The studio looks like John Avery.

On rge back they indicted a medal won in 1865. This suggests to us that the portrait was taken in the late-1860s or even the early- 70s, but not much later. The portrait is interesting because we see a bottom view of the cap, bit a bit confusing as the tassel goes with the arm of the chair.
