Australian school 1900s
Figure 1.--n larger schools isseparate classes. Herewe see a substantial school. We are not sure about the children. They boys seem to be about the same age, suggesting this was not all the children at the school. The girls, however are a wide age group. Source: Underwood. This was part of a seies about school children around the world.

We note numerous Australian school photographs from the early- 20th century. We note single gender and coed schools in Australa. Primary schools could be mixed, but secondary schools were usually single gender schools. Small rural schools could be mixed. City chools were often single gender schools. Coeducation in Australia has a 160-year history, driven primarily by financial necessity rather than educational philosophy. While the 1860s saw Victoria pioneer mixed-gender government schools to save costs in rural areas. Early state secondary schools in Victoria were generally coeducational. We note an unidentified school with both boysand girls, but the two genders are kept apart. One approch in larger schools isseparate classes. Herewe see a substantial school. We are not sure about the children. They boys seem to be about the same age, suggesting this was not all the children at the school. The girls, however are a wide age group.
