South African School Activities: Sports (Games)

Figure 1.--This photo was taken at a private school of Johannesburg. Athletics (track and field), along with rugby and cricket, is one of the main school sports in South Africa. This boy pupil is engaged in high jumping. As in many South African schools, most pupils perform athletic in bare feet.

The sports popular in South Africa are the same as those popular in England. We note boys playing cricket, football (soccer), and rugby. Soccer has becomne increasingly popular in recent years, although rugby and cricket are also very important. In addotion a variety of other team sports like basketball are also played. In addition there are many indivisual sports. As far as we know only the major world team sports are played, especially those of English origin. We do not know any local African games that are played./ There were of course a variety of specialized uniform for various team sports. The uniforms are the standard ones developed in England. We do not know of any destinctive South African uniform items. At this we do not know how the sports program differs at the different types of South African schools.

Athletics

Basketball

Basketball is not a sport we normally associate with South Africa. We are not sure how poopular basketball is in South Africa. It does not appear to be a major sport, but we have little information at this time other than a few team photographs. We suspect that basketball may be somewhat more popular among Blacks than Whites. A similar sport called netball is widely played by girls. Netball differs from basketball in that there is no dribbling.

Cricket

Cricket is one of several sports the British brought to South Africa in the 19th century. Cricket was being played infiormally (1820s). The South African cricket team is today called the Proteas, it was formerly the Springboks. They are administrated by Cricket South Africa. The initial domestic first class cricket match was the reported with the Currie Cup competition (1889). Transvaal who defeated Kimberley. in the same year, South Africa and England played at St George’s Park Cricket Ground in Port Elizabeth. The Currie Cup became the established national championship. Sir Donald Currie donated the Trophy as he did with Rugby. The name of the Curie Cip competition has changed to the Castle Cup (1996-97) and now the SuperSport series, South Africa’s primary domestic inter-provincial four-day cricket competition. Cricket was at first a game played by the English and it was the English and English schools that have dominated the history of South African cricket. One avid plsayer has published a book describing the black South Africans playing crcket. [Odendaal] He describes a cricketing culture among blacks that began with the establishment of the first black mission school (1850s). This led top cricket sides and clubs. And Afrikanbers also took to gamme. Here school cricket probably played an importsant role. South African cricket was suspend by the ICC from international cricket because of its government's policy of apartheid (1970). With the estanlish ment of democracy, the ICC reinstated South africa (1991). We do not know a great deal about school cricket in South Africa. We suspect it is strongest at private schools, but hopefully our South African leaders will be able to provide some derails.
