Individual Swiss School Garments: Sweaters


Figure 1.-- This Swiss boy lived near Zurich in 1944 at the height of World War II, but of course the Swiss were officially neutral. I think it might be a detail from a larger picture, maybe a whole class. The boy seems to be about 12 years old, the equivalent of the American 8th grade. Notice the woolen sweater with a roll top and button closure at the neck. The short trousers and black long stockings seem to have been quite common for Swiss boys in the mid-1940s, especially during the chilly months of the year. The heavy boots with high tops and brass hooks for the laces are interesting, perhaps not uncommon in a country where hiking in the mountains.

A reader writes, "In many European countries, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, villages (and even smaller towns) didn't have pathed streets before, say, 1960. The children had boots all the time (not only for hiking -- which was not very common in earlier times)."
