The portrait is undated, but was probanly taken in 1862. We have no other information on the school other than the CDV images taken about the same tme. We don't know when the school was founded or how long it operated. The small class size suggests to us tht it was a private school. There would have been public schools in New London at the time. These boys look to come from affluent families. The teacher is Newton Fuller. The portrait was taken at a photographic studio. A map has been added to give a school room look. The boys are holding books. The boys are identified: Lathan Fitch, Geo Brown Jr., standing; left to right, Fred Latimer; Fred Richards; Fred Bodet; ? Newcomb; Leslie Pratt. Chronology

The class portrait here is undated. We have found other portraits of the boys at the school that were dated 1862. We would guess that the portrait here was taken in 1862 or close to it.

Mr. Fuller's Class

The teacher is Newton Fuller. The portrait was taken at a photographic studio. The photographer was Morgan and Bolles, New London. A map has been added to give a school room look. The boys are holding books. The boys are identified: Lathan Fitch, Geo Brown Jr., standing; left to right, Fred Latimer; Fred Richards; Fred Bodet; ? Newcomb; Leslie Pratt. This photo was acquired with Newcomb and other family photos from New London, Connecticut. The boys look about 10 years old.

Clothing

There was no school uniform. The boys wear a variety of outfits. two boys wear military looking dark collar buttoning jckets with brass buttons. two other boys wear similr jackets it lighter colors. One boy seems to be wearing a tunic. Two boys wear jackets with lapels. All the boys wear long pants. We see boys with and without matching jackkets and pants.

Civil War

The outbreak of the Civil War resulted in an outburst of patriotism, both in the North and South. The school military unit may have been a reflection of this. Of course these boys were too young for actial service, but the Star Company allowed them to show their patriotism and support for the War. Some of their fathers or older brothers probably enlisted. Some of the other images show the boys in military uniform posed with rifles. The portrait here and the related portraits of the boys are interesting because it shows a class and group of boys during the Civil War (1861-65). The boys seem to have formed a school unit--Star Company. They wre uniforms and even had a flag with the stars aranged in a star. There were various ways of arrangeing the stars before and after the War. We are not sure how the School used the military units or if there were others at the school. It seems to have been some kind of patriotic exercise. The boys may have worn the uniforms for drill.
