U.S. School Clothes: Sunset School (West Virginia)

Figure 1.-- Here we see a classroom scene of the Sunset School in Marey, West Virginia during 1921. It is a wonderful view of a class in progress. Although staged it probably was a good reflection. We think it may be a one room school, but there does not seem to be a wide variance in the ages of the children. The boy in front wears a blouse knickers and is barefoot. Thec girls veside him wear long stockings or are also barefoot. At the time it was still quite common for children to come to school barefoot, although by October 7 when the photograph was taken it was gettiung close to the time the children would have to begin wearing shoes. The photograph was taken by Lewis Wickes Hine who documenbt child labor in the early-20th century. This is not the kind of photograoph he usually took as it shows children where they should be getting an education.

This is not the kind of photograph he usually took because it shows children where they should be -- in school getting an education. Perhaps he was in West Virginia photographing child labvor, but most of his child labor photographs were taken 1905-15. The imasge shows a well appointed school class and a teacher who know your business.
