U.S. School Clothes: Individual School--Unidentified Milwaukee School (1898-99)

Milwaukee School 1898
Figure 1.--This looks like a 6th or 7th grade class at an unidentified Milwaukee school, oprobably about 1898-99. The boys all look to be weearing knee pants suits. Notice the homes in the background. This was clearly a middle-class neighborhood explaing why the chiidren are so well dressed.

We know nothing about this school except the name of the studio that came to the school was located in Milwaukee which is why we know the school was in Miluakee. We can see a corner of the school in the background. The dealer dates it to 1898-99. This is an estimate, but seems reasonable to us. But it could be a little earlier ir latter, anywhere about (1895-1905). It is a large-sized cabinet card providing a clear imgge of period press. It is an elementary (primary) school allythough we do not know if ut is a 6 or 8-year program school. The children here look yo be about 11-12 years oldwhich would mean it could be a 6 or 8-year program school. Children clearly dressed up for school. The boys all wear knee-pants suits worn long stockings which tells you how common knee pants were at the time. Notice the absence of any Fauntleroy trim. Neckwear varied, Not all boys have neckwear. Many do, but we see only one floppy bow. The girls all look to wear much more varied dresses. One girl wears what look's like a boy's suit jackets. We do not see any blouses and skirts. Several girls wear hairbows. The studio was C.F. Zannder. 1899
