Schoolwear Long Stockings: Chronology--The 20th Century

The hosiery conventions for long stockings begn to change in the 20th century. Long stockings were still very common in many countries, but gradually became a more seasonal garment. The pants worn with them also varied. Knee pants were common in the 1900s. They were usually woirn with long stockings in America by school age boys. Three quarter socks were widely wirn in Europe by older boys than in America. Long stockings appeared as soon as the weather got cooler. Many mothers made the change on a calendar basis. Knickers became common in America during the 1910s and were worn with long stockings. Many European boys began to wear short pants. Some older boys woite knickers. This was especually the case after World War I. Color preference began to change weith tan shades becoming popular. And we see more children wearing ankle and three-quarter socks on a sesonal basis. American boys began to chabge from long stockings to knee soicks in the 1930s. Some younger boys wore long stockings with short pants. After World War II long stockings disappeared in America and many other counties, but continuerd to be worn in some European countries such as Germany, Polsand, and Russia for some time. The developments of children's tights meant the end of long stockings, but tights were introduced at different times in Western and Eastern Europe.

The 1900s

The hosiery conventions for long stockings begn to change in the 20th century. We see younger boys wearing socks in some countries during the 19th century, especially pre-school boys. This of course varied from country to country. We see more school age boys wearing sovks after the turn-of-the cebtury. We see some Long stockings were still very common in many countries, but gradually became a more seasonal garment. The pants worn with them also varied. Knee pants were common in the 1900s. They were usually worn with long stockings in America by school age boys. Three quarter socks were widely wirn in Europe by older boys than in America. Long stockings appeared as soon as the weather got cooler. Many mothers made the change on a calendar basis.

The 1910s

There were major changes in pants during the 1910s, but hosiery was less changed. Here there were major variations between Amnerica and Euripe. Knickers became common in America during the 1910s, but like knee pants were almost always worn with long stockings--usually black long stockings. Rarely do we see boys wearing anything but long stockings withb knickers in America. Some younger boys wore knee pnts outfits, often with three-querter socks during the summer and long stockings during the winter. Knickers were most common for school-age boys. Quite a few American boys went barefoot with knee pants kn the 1900s. This was much less common with knickers. Trend were more varied in Europe. Knickers never became standard boys wear. Many European boys began to wear short pants. Hosiery variedamong countries, primarily on a climatic basis. Long stockings comntinued go be widely worn, but commonly on a seasonal basis. We see more children wearing three-quarter socks or knee sicks on a sesonal basis.

The 1920s

Differences persisted between Anmerica and Europe. American boys continued wearing knickers to school, although we seen older teens mostly wearing long paants. Boys continued to wear black long stockings. Younger boys might wear long stockings with short pants, but this was not very common for school after the first 2 years. Color preference began to change weith tan shades becoming popular for younger children. We also see colors changing in Europe. But there boys more commonly wore short pants. This was especually the case after World War I. Some older boys might knickers before finally going into long pants. We see more children wearing knee socks on a seasonal basis. This varied from country to country largely on a seasonal basis. Long stockings continued to be very common in Germany and related countries like Switzerland and Denmark. There long stickings were very common on a seasinal basis. They were also common to the east in Czechoslovakiam Polnd, and the Soviet Union. British boys no longer wore long stovkings, but some giurls did. This was particularly true at some privarte schools which insisted on long stockings as part of the uniform. Further south in France and Italy, long stockings were much less common. We also notice Japanese boys wearing long stockings to school.

The 1930s

Children continued to wear long stockings to school in the 1930s, but this varied substantially from country to country, primarily on a geographic basis. Stockings were mostly worn by countries at northern lattitudes. To an extent they were worn for formality, but geography was a factor. This included countries in Asia, Europe and North America. We see Japanese school children commonly wearing long stockings and we think Korean children as well, although we have less information. North American children also wore long stockings, although they were declining in popularity. American school boys and girls began to chage from long stockings to knee socks in the 1930s. Long stockings were still worn , but much less commonly than the 20s. Boys mostly wore knickers with knee socks. Some younger boys wore long stockings with short pants during chilly weather. Long stockings were more popular in Canada. It is in northern Europe that we mostly see long stockings during the 30s. Short pants were still widely worn in the 30s even during the winter. Children wore long stockings seaonally. Long stockings were not very common in England, presumablythe winters are more mild than the rest of northern Europe. We see long stockings commonly worn in Scandanavia, Germany, Poland, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Poland, the Baltics, and the Soviet Union. Knickers were also worn, but short pnts were much more common. We mostly see pre-teens wearings long stockings, but in Germany and ome other countries we also see younger teens wearing them.

The 1940s

We continue to se school vhildren wearing long stockings in ghe 1940s. Long stockings generallydisappeared in Ameria during the 1940s. After World War II long stockings disappeared in America and many other counties, but continuerd to be worn in some norhern European countries such as Germany, Poland, and Russia for some time.

The 1950s

The developments of children's tights meant the end of long stockings, but tights were introduced at different times in Western and Eastern Europe.
