American Farm Overalls

children's overalls
Figure 1.--this undated cabinet card in a small rural town shows a boy with a calf. it would have bee taken ariound the turn of the 20th century. Even though a kind of farm scene, notice the boy is not wearing overalls, but a suit jacket and knee pants. It is hard to determine if the boy was dressed up for a special event such as 4 H farm contest with his calf or church etc. At the turn-of-the 20th century the cost of photography came down with the introductiion of the Kodak Brownie. While this is a cabimert card, the photograph was probably taken with a Brownie.

We are not sure at thus time what farmers and farm children were wearing. Overalls today are associated with farm wear. Bur this was not the case when overalls were first introduced (mid-19th century). Gradually they became adopted by factory workers in America's burgoning industrial economy. we do not know just when farmers and farm familes began adopting them. Overalls appeared about the same time as photography so we should see them in the photographic record. The reason we do not see overalls in the photographic record to any extent may be that farmers dressed up when they came into town to have their portrauts taken. Photography in the 19th century was mostly studio photography. Thus in the photograpic record we just do not see farmers wearing overalls to any extent in the photographic record. A major exception to studio photgraphy by the late-19th century is school photography and again we do not see overall to any extent. This suddenly changed in the late-1900s decade. Suddenly we begin to see farm kids wearing overalls.
