English Short Pants/Trousers: Types--Shortalls

Figure 1.--Thi is an undated English English postcard-back studio portrait. They are acting out a tr pzrty. We are not dure zbout the date, but would guess the late-1910s or early-20s. The children look to be bout 3-9 years old. Th older boy wears a white sailor suit. Th younger boy wesrs shortalls. Notice the strap shoes. The girl wears a white summer frock. The studio was Fairwrathby at Salcombe in Devon.

We had thought that shortalls were primarily an American style and we believe that this is what had developed, especially after World War II. Most of the imsgds we have foujnd are mericzn imgdes. But here we see a very early example of shortalls. We believe that this is earlier than we see them in America, although the image is undated. We think the portrait is either from the late-1910s or early 20s. We have not found many examples of English shortalls and this is the earliest example. It is a light-colored garment, although we are not sure about the color. The boy looks to be about 3-4 years old.
