Amish Boys (1980s)

Figure 1.--This photo of a group of Amish teenage boys looks to have been taken in the 1980s because the hair looks a little longer than we often see Amish boys wearing their hair. The boys are drinking and smoking is something, something you do not often see.

A HBC reader writes, "These teenage Amish boys seem to be drinking beer and smoking. Am I right about that? That is something you do not often see." Well it cerainly looks like it. It's difficult to tell from the cans, but the clors look more like beer than soda pop cans. Another reader writes. "The Amish do drink beer (part of their German heritage), and I think smoking is also permitted in some Amish groups. I've seen Amish with cigars. But I suppose cigarettes are discouraged. Of course the boy with the can may be drinking something like Mountain Dew, Sprite, or some other soft drink."
