German Tie Strap Shoes: Colors

Figure 1.--Here we see a German boy on his first day of school with his goodie cone. He wears tie syrap shoes. We are not sure about the color, perhaps light blue. The portrait is undated. We would guess it was taken in the 1940s or perhaps the early 50s.

These tie strap shoes seem to have been colored shoes. The examples we have seen were light colors. We are not sure just what color they were because of the black-and-white-photography of the day. We would guess light blue. Other countries are possible, but blue shades seem the most likely. Some straps shoes were done in red, but these would not show up as such light colors in black-and-white. A reader writes, "Since you speculated that the shoes of the boy in the picture might be a shade of blue, and orthochromatic film is sensitive to blues and greens, which therefore already showed up as lighter shades of gray in 19th century photographic images." This photograph looks to have been taken in the mid-20th century when "panchromatic" (sensitive to all colors) was in use. Thus the grey scale images are a more accurate reflection of color than 19th century photographs. We note colored strap shoes in addition to black, brown , and white. The colored shoes were usually blue or red. This mnormally involved a dark red. Light reds or pinl were not very common. The blue shoes were done in both dark and light blues. Thus we think the color here is most likelyb a pale blue. Other colors were not common. Our archive of colored strap shoes is still very limited. Thus we are not sure how representative this was. Hopefully as our archive grows we can get a better fix on this.
