Young American Family: Mother, Son and Daughter (The 1840s)

Figure 1.--This wonderful cased Dasguerreotyoe show a young family, mother and her two chuildren. Note her finger-free gloved hands (glovelettes). Fashionable wommen commonly wore gloves when dressing up--but rarely for photographic portraits. The children look to be about 6-9 years old. We have a good examples of period hair styling. We are not sure how to date this Dag. But as we have not seen Ambros with similar hair styles, we think the the 1840s or very early-50s is likely, but welcome reaader assessments.

Another probable 1840s Daguerreotype is a family portrait, a young mother and her two children who look to be about 6-9 years old. We think it my be a 1840s Dag, because we do not see these hair styles to any extent in Ambros. We would be very interested in reader input. We do not post these images here because we have definitely dated them, but we think that they are probably 1840s images and hope more informtion can be acquired to more defimitely date them. The boy has a side part and mnother and daughter r center parts. The boy does not have long hair, it is well off his shoulders, but there is there more hir t the bck thn enormally see. He hs asmall collar with a stick done more as a bow than we usually see. His cut-away jacket hs colored piping at the edges abd cuffs, abd unusally the slbows. The piping marches the vest, done in ciontrasting color. We re left to guess th color, but we sussect a bright color like red. His is ister also has a lot of hir at the rear, nuch longer than the boy. She also has a smll white collar with a ptterned dress done with half sleeves. .
