American Eton Collars: Patterns

Figure 1.--Here we see two brothers in what looks like the 1890s wearing patterned white collars. The patters are intersecvting squares made up of small square lines. They look like Eton collars, but the large floppy bows cover the collar tips. So we cannot tell if they were pointed (like an Eton collar) or rounded (like a Peter Pan collar). The studio was Marton in Bllomingtom, Illinois.

Discerning colors is a problem, in black and white pohotograohy, but we can make out the patterns much easier--at least to see that there are patterns. The most common pattern seems to have been polkadots. They are easy to make out. Some look like polkadots, but they are not rounded. Other patterns are more diffiucult to identify. The portrait in the previous page ias a good example. We can discern a semi circle, but not much else. To see what the patterns are we need close-ups so we can make out the details. We do notice other patterns such as circles, but they are often not easy to see much more unless we have close-ups. There are also rectangles. The boys here have identical detachbke collars with interescting rectangles figure 1). Because of the large floppy bows we can not see if the collars have pointed tips like a classic Eton collar. We think that there were geometric figures and shapes as well, but we are just beginning our assessment.
