Scottish Kilts: Highland Kilt Outfits--Options

Figure 1.--This Scottish boy had his portrait taken with a formal Highland kilt outfit, in this case a three-piece outfit. Notice the military cuff styling. The only thing he seems to lack is a dirk in his knee socks. The image is undated, but we would guess about 1910. Image courtesy of the MD collection.

Boys and men might wear a full, formal Highland kilt outfit or they might wear a more informal outfit. Proper Scottish kilts were a separate skirt-like garmet, usually in a tartan material worn with a range of different jackets. Boys and men might wear a full, formal Higland kilt outfit or they might wear a more informal outfit. A formal Highland kilt with all the regalia might consist of a Scotts' cap, preferably a Glengary, black military jacket, ruffled jabot or Eton collar, kilt, trews, knee socks (Argyl was a popular option), and broges or buckles shoes. Somewhat less informal outfits were worn with short jackets, often done in a light green or fawn tweed. Some of the regalia might be worn with either the black military or the short jackets, but the fanciest outfits such as the ones with lacy jabots were usually the ones with the black military jackets. While the jackets often varied considerablt, the accompanying kilts did not.

Black Military Jackets

We note Highland kilt outfits done with black jackers and military styling. The military styling included epauelettes , large fancy cuffs, and metal buttonds. These black jackets were usually the more formal of the various Highland kilt outfits. A formal Highland kilt with all the regalia might consist of a Scotts' cap, prerably a Glengary, black jacket, ruffled jabot or Eton collar, kilt, trews, Eton collars were common through the 1920s, but became increasinly less popular durng the 1930s. We have archived one of these military-style outfits in the vintage clothing section.

Short Jackets

We see different fabric jackets worn as part of Highland kilt outfits. We note cut-away jackets in the mid- and late-19th century. We are less sure about the early-19th century, but kilt outfits were less popular at the time. Vest (waistcoats) were common with the cut-away jackets, both with small lapels or with no lapels. We are not sure, but believe that light-greens and browns were the most likely colors. Gray is another possibility. The jackets seemto be flannel. We see these jackets worn with many of the same regalia with which the black military jackets were worn, such as a feather (only chiefs were entitled to wear an eagle feather), dirk, cap badge, gloves, and other items. Scottish boys wore both Barmoral and Glengary caps with their kilts. Some fashion experts insist that the Balmoral should not be worn with the kilt. After the turn-of-the 20th century, especially after World War I, we begin to increasingly see shirt single-breasted jackets, looking somewhat like blazers. Most were done in tweed. We see light browns and greens. Until the 1920s this was almost always with an Eton collar. The Eton collars were often wirn with small black bow ties. Eton collars were still common in the 19230s, but had become less so by the 30s. These short jackets became the primary jackets worn with kilts. For formal events like wedding , various regalia might be added. For less formal events like school, the regalia was generally not worn, except perhaps the sporran. Obviously the dirk would not be worn.
