Boys' Tunics: Accompanying Garments--Belts

Figure 1.--The boy here seems to have a leather belt on his tunic suit. It is colored to match the suit and stylistically shapped. Note the double belt buckles. The portrait was taken by R. McCormic, Belleville, Canada.

Tunics were very commonly worn with belts, not all of them but most were worn with belts. We are not sure about the early-19th century, but by mid-century belts were very common. Tunics seem to be the farment most commonly worn with ornmental belts. We note both regular leather belts and matching coordinated belts worn with tunics. We don't have much information on the tunics worn with mid-19th centyry tunics. We note that the tunics worn at the turn-of-the-20th century had matching or cordinated belts. These tunics were very commonly worn with belts. The belts of course had no practical use when worn over tunics and were purely ornaental.

Regular Belts

We note both regular leather nelts and matching coordinated belts worn with tunics. We don't have much information on the tunics worn with mid-19th centyry tunics. A good example is an unidentified American boy, we believe in the 1840s.

Coordinated Belts

We note that the tunics worn at the turn-of-the-20th century had matching or cordinated belts. These tunics were very commonly worn with belts. Most boys wore their tunics with belts of widely varying widths. Almost all the portraits we have moted show boys wearing tunic suits with these belts. These appears to have been decorative and without any practical purpose. They usually were attached to the tunic jacket with a kind of saggig affect. The pants the boy was wearing and which a belt was designed to hold up were under the tunic jacket and thus could be suported bt a belt on the tunic. Normally the belts match the material of the tunic both in material and color. We have, however, noted some of these belts in other materials such as leather and in contrasting colors. Most were straight cut belts, but we have noted other with more stylistic designs. We noted belts of varying length.
