American Tunics Chronology: The 1850s--Tunic Photography

American tunic suits

Figure 1.--Here we see an unidentified by, we think photographed in the late-1850s. He wears a tunic outfit with long pants. We don't have any information about the boy, but we have portraits of his family. They look like an afluent family. Cick on the image to see the family.

Much more information on fashion becomes available with the development of photography. Tunics were worn in the early-19th century, but we have little information on them. This all changed with photography. This began with the Daguerreotype (1840s). By the 1850s we not only have Dags, but Ambros and tin-types as well. The Dags give us more images than ever before in the 1840s. Even larger numbers of images exist from the 1850s. The flling prices were a factor as well as the expanding economy and industrialization generated an ibcresingly prpsperous economy. Most Ambros were taken in the 1850s or very early 60s so this may help us identify 1850s styles. Tin-types continued to be taken througout the rest of the 19th century. Most cased tin-types, however, date to the 1850s. We see tunics in both the 1840s and 50s. After the 50s, we see fewer boys wearing tunics, but they do not disappear.
