Little Lord Fauntleroy Suits: 9 Year Olds--Sailor Jackets

Fauntleroy suits age 9 years
Figure 1.--This cabint card portrait shows an unidentifie boy and his little sister. At foirst glance the oy looks to be wearing a Fauntleroy suit, but if you lookmclosrly he is waring a sailor styled jacket. He looks to be about 9 years old. The portrait is undated, but the mount style and white whicker suggests the early-1900s to us, perhaps 1900-05. The studio was Baily of Tamaqua, Pennsylvania.

We notice a sailor suit jacket dome to be worn open. This seems to have been a popular style in the 1890s and early-1900s. As it was essentially a cut-way jacket, we see older boys wearing these jackets with Fauntleroy blouses than wore the classic Fauntleroy suits. These jackets were done in various material and types of sailor detailing. Most but not all had the three-stripe detailing. All had the V-collar and back flap. Normally sailor suits and Fauntleroy blouses were not mixed, but these open jackets were an exception. We see quite a number of these outfits in the photographic record. Some of the blouses have very large collars and ruffles and often cover over most of the sailor collar. The impression is a Fauntleroy rather than a sailor suit. We see another example of an unidentified boy about the same age wearing the identical outfit.
