Little Lord Fauntleroy Suits: 9 Year Olds--Standard Suits

Figure 1.--These boys are dressed in identical Fauntleroy outfuits. They look to be standard double-breasted knee pants suits. The standard suits are paired with classic Fauntleroy blouses and floppy bows. The boys are not identified. They do not look alike, but the idetical outfits suggests that they are brothers. The ages are not spcied, but we would guess the ages are 8-10 years. The portraits look to have been taken during the 1890s. The photograoher was the Bates Stidio in Fostoria, Oregon.

Fauntleroy looking outfits were still quite common for 9 year olds. We do not, hoever, see the classic Funtleroy suits. What we see more commonly with the oldr boys by this age wearing regular suits with a variety of Fauntleroy trim. This includes a mix of large collars, usually variously styled ruffled collars, and perhaps floppy bows and large cuffs. This may be a Fauntleroy blouse or pin on collars and cuffs. This of course looks at first glance like a Fauntleroy suit, but most of the portraits of 9-year olds are regular suits with the popular Fauntleroy trim. But they are worn with a variety of jackets and not just the classic cut-away jackers. Suits were still very commin at the time. And a range of styles were used. This included both single- and double-breasted jackets. we see this both in studio portaits as well as school portraits. The Fauntleroy styling during the Fauntleroy craze (1885-1905) was extroninarily popular and we see very large numbrs of boys even boys oldr thn 9 years with Faintleroy styling or some Fauntleroy elements. The classic cut-away jacket suirs were not common by 5-years of age, but Fauntkeroy blouses, largedloppy bows, and other Fauntlerou=y items were, not only for9-year olds, but even boys into these younger teensmening primarily 13-year olds. .
