In the early part of the decade we still see classic Fauntleroy suits with the small velvet cut-away jackets and fancy Fauntleroy blouses. We do not see lace collars as commonly, but large ruffled collars were often worn. American Fauntleroy suits were almost always worn with knee pants and long stockings. In Britain, bloomer knickers were more common. While these are theclassic suits. Many boys especially older boys wearing a variety of regular suits weith different Fauntleroy items like reffled collrs and floppy bows. Such outfits, however, had fallen considerably in popularity by the end of the decade. At least the classic versions of the Fauntleroy suit were less common. School portraits in particular are a good indicator of popular fashion. We still see boys with Fauntleroy items, but rarely the classic cut-away jacket suits, especially after the early years of the 1900s decade. This is why we date the Fauntleroy craze to 1885-1905. We do continue to see Fauntleroy blouses, especially the less elaborate styles.
