American Fauntleroy Blouses: Types

Figure 1.--Here we have a family cninet card portrait. The potrait is undtedm but wouuld have been taken in the late-1890s. There are two boys wearing Funtleroy blouses. The younger boy wears the classic Fauntleroy blouse, but a reltively small collar which we begin to see at the turn of the century. The older boy wears the kind of Fauntleroy blouses worn by older boys no longer wearing Fauntleroy suits. Notice that it was not as fancy and had a back flap like a sailor suit. There are nmes written in the back, but we re not sure how to match them up with the individuals pictured. The portrait is from Allegan, Michigan.

We note two different types of Fauntleroy blouses. The first type was the fancy blouses designed to be worn wih classic cut-away Fauntleroy jackets. They were mostly white blouses, not always white, but the vast majority were white. These blouses were varied, but ften were done with lace and ruffled trim and had very large collars. They were usually done in very fine fabrics. They were motly done inthe small sizes for which the jackers were usually done. Most commonly this would be for boys about 3-6 years of age. The second type of Fauntleroy blouse was not usually worn with the classic Fauntleroy jacket. They were often done in plain fabrics. We do not see lace being used , but we do see large collars with back flaps and various types of trim. Unlike the classic Fauntleroy blouses, these blouses were commonly done in colors and various prints. And they were done in older sizes than the classic blouses. We see even younger teens wearing them. They were commoly worn without jackets. Some boys wore them with suit jacket, but not the classic Fauntleroy jackets for younger boys. The chronology of the older boy blouses was a little different than that of the classic blouses.

Classic Fauntleroy Blouses

The first type was the fancy blouses designed to be worn wih classic cut-away Fauntleroy jackets. They were mostly white blouses, not always white, but the vast majority were white. These blouses were varied, but ften were done with lace and ruffles. This might include copious amounts of expensie fine lace as well as trim. They had very large collars. Some but not all had back flaps. The laceand ruffles were not only done for the collar, but down the front of these blouses. They were usually done in very fine fabrics such as silk and linnen. They were motly done in the small sizes for which the jackets were usually done. Most commonly this would be for boys about 3-6 years of age. We see fancy blouses earlier, but thge classic Gauntleroy blouses appeard about 1885 when Ms. Burnett published her book.

Older-boy Fauntleroy Blouses

The second type of Fauntleroy blouse was not usually worn with the classic Fauntleroy jacket. They were often done in plain fabrics. We do not see lave being used , but we do see large collars with back flaps and various types of trimduch as a lacy look or piping. The trim was usually done in white or contrasting colors. As far as we can tell, they were always done with back flaps. The chronology of the older boy blouses was a little different than that of he classic blouses. Our chronlogy is not yet defnitive, but seems to be about 1895-1910. These blouses seem very common at the time, perhaps more common than actual Fauntleroy blouses. They would have been the boy's dress shirt.
