Fauntleroy suits flat caps
Figure 1.--Here we see unidentified siblings probably aboout 1905, bassed on the cabinet card mpint. Theboy lookto be about 6-14 years old. Notce the boy in the Fauntleroy suit wears a flat cap like his big brother. Notice that it was not take in astudio. We sare not sure about the buildings in he bckgrond. They do not look like family homes nor do hey look like atenment. Also confusing is the trashy setting.

There is an extensive photographic record over the decades concerned here. The development of albumen photography substantially reduced the cost of a photographic portrait. So fashion is very well documented to a greater extent than ever before in history. Thus we know a great deal about both Fauntleroy suits and flat caps. The flat cap was not very common in the 1880s when the Fauntleroy suit first appeared. The flat cap, however, was not seen as an important style of boys head wear. We see a few flat caps being worn with Fauntleroy suits in the 1890s, especially the late-90s. Most of the combination we see in the 1900s decade. This was when the Fauntleroy suit was decling in popularity and the flat cap as increasing in popularity. It was at this time the flat cap was becoming more popular. By the 1910s, the flat cap had become almost universal, but we see very few Fauntleroy suits. We thus see a few examples of boys wearing flat caps with Fauntleroy suits in the early-20th century. We see Fauntleroy influenced suits after the 1900s. They tended to be different from the classic Fauntleroy suit, but we do note note then being worn with flat caps.
