We still see destinctive sailor suits in France, nothing like the increasingly standardized traditional suits we see in Britain and Germany as well as Denmark in he 1890s. Perhaps because so many Royal Navy victories were gained over the French make the traditional three-stripe detailing less platiable to the French. (Two of the threevsripes were victories over the French. French boys commonly ewore Sailor suits by the 1890s. They had become standard outfit for French boys from all walks of life, but especially the middle class. DStriped dickies were popular. Knee pants suits seem the most common. We currently have, however, only limited information on French sailor suit fashions during the 19th century, even the late-19th century. For some reasons French portaits seem less avilable than for other major European countries. We see fewer French noys wearing sailor uits to chool han many other countries, pobably beause so many Frenvch boys wore smocks. We are not sure why. So it is still difficult to follow fashion shifts during this period. We are not entirely sure just what wre the popular sailor styles. Our archiveof images is still framentary. We know much more about the 20th century. We hope to gradually expand our 19th century coverage.
