French Siblings: Matching Sailor Suits (about 1910)

Figure 1.--Here we see a French postcard-back portrait. It is undated, but was probably taken about 1910. The boys wear matching sailor suits with white cut-away lace over the V sailor collars. Their little sister wears a white dress and hair bow. The children look to be about 3-8 years old.. They all wear the same dark three-quarter socks and high-top shoes.

Footwear and hosiery was not as gender specuific as other garments. A reader provides a more detailed discussion. "This is an interesting image. I notice that the two boys have identical center part haircuts. The dark colored sailor suits have a lace (I assume white) add on collar to them to make them fancier. (I assume for the photo and to match the sister or younger brother's outfit since it is France, and boy's at that time could wear both dresses and hair bows. It is hard for me to tell). The two boys are wearing what looks like a knit shield under the sailor blouse. The blouses are newly ironed and possibly starched. They also have box pleats on them. There is a six pedal ornament to keep the sailor tie in place. Both boys also wear a pin on their right breast. (I assume it is some religious object). The blouse cuffs are two or three inches long. The short trousers have (knee trousers in the US) have ornamental 3 buttons down each side. They also have a very wide belt which like the ornamental buttons on the knee trousers is distinguishable on the boy standing. The three children wear socks (woolen they appear seem thick) that are slightly higher than the high top shoes. Very useful observations. The pins are interesting. I doubt if the younger child is a boy though, although it is impossible to to be syre without the names. The convention of dressing younger boys in dresses was declining in France after the turn of the 20th century.
