German Edwardian Sailor Suits: Age Conventions

Figure 1.--Many German brothers were dressed in identical sailor suits. This mother has selected sailor outfits with age destinctions. These Bremen brothers were photographed in 1907. The younger boy wears a fancy sailor tunic. His older brother wears a standard sailor suit. Also notice the different hair styles. Areader writes, "This is a very pleasing picture. They look as if they are very close brothers. I think they are very happy children. They look so relaxed , close and kind. Their eyes are bright and friendly."

Some mothers might dress all of the children in sailor outfits. Dressing children identically or in coordinsted outfits were very popuilar at the time. And sailor suits were ideally suited for this. Sometimes mothers used idential sailor suits. Even boys and girls might be dressed alike, onlt the girls wearing skirts rather than trousers. Many German boys wore identicalm sailor suits. Other mothers might vary the outfits, depending on the age of the boys. There were various ways of doing this. Younger boys might wear sailor tunics, for exmple, rather than a standard sailor suit. Even if the children were all dressed in standard sailor suits, there were ways of varying the outfits for children of different ages. That said, more often than not the sailor suit was used for dressing children of different ages similarly.
