German Sailor Suits: Gender Trends--Similar and Coordinated Outfits

Figure 1.--Here we see all the children in a family except the baby wearing sailir suits. The boys and girls wear differently styled middy blouses. In this case itwas the girls who wpore the more traditionally (the nost like actual uniforms) styled sailor outfits. Unfortunsaterly as with modst of our images, mother is not available to know why she made the choises she did.

Some mothers chose similar or coordinated sailor suits, but not identical suits. And we see some children wearing completely different sailor styles. They are coordinaed only in the sence that were sailor outfits, not because they were styled or detailed similarly. There were many different ways of styling or detailing sailor suits. The image here is a good example (figure 1). The sailor suit was especially popular for this because it was considered appropriate for both boys and girls. Some mothers dressed the entire family in sailot outits. In other instances just the boys or girls were dressed in identical outfits. The middy blouses worn by boys and girls could be identical, primarily because the both used traditional styling. We see some children in identical outfits. Other mothers have used sailor outfits, but made some concessions deemed as appropriate to age and gender. The styles of the middy blouses were very similar in either case, but the girls always wore skirts. And we notice girls wearing styles that were also worn by boys as well as styles that were only worn by girls. Boys were most likely to wear traditional styles closer to actual uniforms. Girls might also wear those styles, but wore a range of non-traditional styles that did not look anything like actual uniforms.

Similar/Coordinated Sailor Outfits

Some mothers chose similar or coordinated sailor suits, but not identical suits. Here we are talkig about mothers who dressed the two genders differently but the differen genders identically. There are many insances in which the children in a family all were dressed differently, including different types of sailor suits. There were many different ways of styling or detailing sailor suits. Some mothers dressed the entire family in sailot outits. In other instances just the boys or girls were dressed in identical outfits. Other mothers have used sailor outfits, but made some concessions deemed as appropriate to age and gender. The styles of the middy blouses were very similar in either case, but the girls always wore skirts. Here are the basic options available to German mothers.

Similar cut and detailing

Similar cut

We notice some mothers using sailor outfits with similar cuts, almost always the "V"-front sailor styling with back flap, but wih different detailong. The portrait here here is a good example (figure 1). The girls wear traditionally detailed (three-stripes) detailed middy blouses. Their litte brother wears a similarly cut jaket, but without ther three-stripe detailing. Often it was the boy who had the more raditionally stylerd outfits, but this was not always the case.

Different cut and detailing

Girls might also wear those styles, but wore a range of non-traditional styles that did not look anything like actual uniforms. Often this involved the boys wearing traditionally styled outfits ad the girls drsses with varying degrees of sailor styling, but thee wee many othef options. Often when the children wore middy blouses they were similarlly outfitted because both boys and girls coukld sear middy blouses, but when the girls wore dress there could be major differences. Sailor dresss could be done with traditional detailing, but more common there wee major variations.

Sailor Suit Utility

Many Germany mothers liked to coordinate the children's clothes. This varied from mothers who wanted all the children dressed alike to to other mothers who wanted only a degree of coordiatuon. The sailor suit was especially popular with such mothers. It could be used for coordiating outfits because it was considered appropriate for both boys and girls. And mothers had great flexibilkity as to how similar they coordinated the children. This ranged from identical sailor outfits to sailor outfits that were cut and styled differently. Not otherstyled offered such flexibility to mothers interested in coordinatiung the clothes her children wore.

Parents

We believe that these decesions were primarily made by mother. This was certainly the case for the girls. But it was also the case for younger boys. We believe that fathers generrally deferred to the mother as to how the younger boys were dressed. The age in which the father began to play mnore of a role varied from family tofamily, but was probably most common at adolesence. This was of course the age at which sailor suits began to become less common. Here we would be very interested in any information our German readwes may have.
