Movie Reviews: Ko mne, Muhtar! (Russia, 1964)

Figure 1.-- One famous Soviet movie "Ko mne, Muhtar!" (literaly, "To me, Muhtar", a command given to the dog). Almost all Russians will remember the film. The movie is based on an actual police dog. In this scene Glazychev's son tries to give to Muhtar some sweets but Muhtar doesn’t eat. He is trained to accept food only from his master, Lt. Glazychev.

One famous Soviet movie "Ko mne, Muhtar!" (literaly, "To me, Muhtar", a command given to the dog). Almost all Russians will remember the film. The movie is based on an actual police dog. It is about the life of a German shepherd named Muhtar that served years in the militsia (Russian name of the police). Muhtar's master is Lieutenant Glazychev (played by Yuri Nikulin the star of Soviet cinema). Together Muhtar and Lt. Glazychev find criminals of all kinds. They go after murders, thiefs, and other criminals. In one scene of the movie Muhtar helps to catch a dangerous criminal who robbed a big universal store (mall) and killed a guard there. In the scene here, Glazychev's son Vovka (Vladimir, just like Putin) tries to give Muhtar some sweets (figure 1). Muhtar refuses to eat them. He is trained to accept food only from his master, Glazychev. This is a great film for dog lovers. It is a little different than the great American dog films (Lassie and Rin Tin Tin) which usually paired a boy and a loyal pooch. Pets are less common in Russia than the West and thus fewer boys had dogs as pets.
