A British reader remembers seeing a movie revolving around a 7-year old boy named Billy, but doies not recall the title. The film was set in 1961. Billy believes his next door neighbour is an alien. The contemporary costuming in the film seems quite accurate as is often the case with British films made during this era. There are a lot of street scenes giving a good idea of what Ebngland looked like in the 1960s and how people dressed. One HBC reader suggests that the film is "Shadow on the Earth (1987) which was set in 1961. The comedy starred Billy (Sam Hickman), Alex (Craig Smith), and Sammy (Dale Martin). W have not seem the film so we are not sure.
Areader writes, "This is an interesting image of several boys with a home made figure. On the figure is a sign, 'Penny for the Guy'. HBC may already have a note about this, and you know what this refers to: Guy Fawkes Day. Thought it might be worth mention for the HBC non-English readrs. Boys make a figure such as this one and ask 'penny for the Guy', meaning of course Guy Fawkes. Don't know a lot about this tradition, but it's quite a revelry. Fireworks and bonfires, I think, are standard for the annual observance."
Guy Fawkes was the Catholic Restorationist that tried to blow up the House of Pasrliament and kill King James I. The incdent is called the Gunpowder Plot (1605). .
