German Boys' Clothes: Chronologies--Late 19th Century (1870-1900)

Figure 1.--This undated cabinent card is a good example of the range of clothing worn by German children in the late-19th cenbtury, perhaps the 1890s but we re not sure. We have no details about the children, but they look to us like they came from an affluent family. Click on the image for additional information.

Our archive of 19th century German image is still quite limited. Thus we have only limited information at this time about trends in the late 19th century. We have some limited information on the 1870s. Little Lord Fauntleroy suits were not as popular in Germany as in many other countries during the 1880s and 90. We do note boys wearing floppy bows in the 1880s. And knee pants begin to becone popular, at least for younger boys. We also notice bloomer knickers. We note three boys wearing identical velvet ssuits. Prince Wilhelm wore sailor suits in the 1860s. We are not prescisely sure when German boys commonly began wearing them. We do see German boys wearing sailor suits in the the 1880s. They seem much more common in the 1890s. A good example is an unidentified boy. Sailor suits became an especially popular style for boys as Kaiser Wilhelm began building a highseas fleet. The new highseas fleet created enormous interest in Germany for the navy, this must have expanded interest in an already popular boys'style. Children commonly wore long stockings in Germany during the late 19th century. Younger children might wear socks, especially in the summer.

The 1870s

We have some limited information on the 1870s. We begin to see substantial numbers of Germam photographs for the first time in the 1870s. Most were CDVs. Germany after the Franco-Prussian War was united around the Prussian Kingdom (1871). Until that time there were still substantial differences among German states. Younger boys wore dresses, but German boys seemed to have been breeched earlier than boys in other countries such as England and France. Yhis is something we are still assessing. Tunics continued to be popular for boys. Boys wore all kinds of suits. Sailor suits were less popular than in other countries, at least we have not yet found many examples in the photographic record. Suit styles were still not as standardized in the 1870s as they would become later. We note younger boys wearing cut-away jackets. There were a range of different jacket types. We note generally small often white collars. Many boys did not wear neckwear. We see both knee pants and long pants suits. Here age was a factor. Long pants were the most common, but we see more younger boys wearing shortened-length pants. Some children were dessed like. We note three boys wearing identical velvet suits. Prince Wilhelm wore sailor suits in the 1860s. We are not prescisely sure when German boys commonly began wearing them. Long pants were still what most boys wore. We see some knee pnys. There were social class factors here. Knee pants were most common almong affluent, fashion concious families. Children commonly wore long stockings, including white stockings. We are unsure about the hosiery boys in long pants wore. Girls of course wore dresses. We see dresses in a wide variety of styles. Some younger girls had low necklines. The dresses were worn with long stockings and sometimes pantalettes.

The 1880s

Wide-brimmed sailorchats become popular for younger boys. Younger boys still wore dresses, but were generally breeched before boys in many other countries. We note some boys wearing kilt suits, but they not nearly as common as in America. Little Lord Fauntleroy suits appeared in the 1880s, but were not as popular in Germany as in many other countries during the 1880s and 90. We do note boys wearing floppy bows in the 1880s. Collars increased substabtially in size. There were a variety of suiy styles foir boys. Norfolk suits become popular. We note knee pants beginning to becone popular, at least for younger boys. We also notice bloomer knickers. Most boys still wire long pants. We do see German boys wearing sailor suits in the the 1880s. Children commonly wore long stockings in Germany during the late 19th century. Younger children might wear socks, especially during the summer. We still some white stockings, but dark stockings were becoing standard.

The 1890s

Silor suits seem much more common in Germany during the 1890s. A good example is an unidentified boy. Sailor suits became an especially popular style for boys as Kaiser Wilhelm began building a highseas fleet. The new highseas fleet created enormous interest in Germany for the navy, this must have expanded interest in an already popular boys'style. Cjuldren commonly wore black stockings.
