We are unsure as to the date of the image here. No date is given but I would judge it to be late 19th century--perhaps 1890-1900. It is pretty clearly a studio photograph of three siblings. The studio is given at the bottom of the picture as "Atelier Scheurich" in Berlin. The two older children are a boy (on the left) and a girl (on the right). I'm uncertain about the gender of the youngest child in the middle foreground who seems to be wearing a white tunic with a rather masculine looking belt and
carrying what looks like an empty beer mug. I think this child is probably a boy, but the photo is ambiguous. The older boy would seem to be about 10 or 11 and his sister perhaps about 9. The boy with the tunic seems to be about 7 or 8.

It is pretty clearly a studio photograph of three siblings. The studio is given at the bottom of the picture as "Atelier Scheurich" in Berlin. The studio props are also interesting--a pedestal of stone placed together with carpeted steps. The artificiality is almost stage-like. One wonders if the children are dressed for some sort of theatrical performance. Hopefully HBC's German readers
may be able to comment interestingly and informatively on this photograph.
The family is unidentified. Most portraits in the 19th century are quite formal and unimaginative. This portrait has a rather unusual whimsical chracter. This suggests that the familt might have an artistic are other non-conformist character.
The children are almost certainly siblings. The two older children are a boy (on the left) and a girl (on the right). I'm uncertain about the gender of the youngest child in the middle foreground, but would guess that he is a boy. Yhey look be about 4-11 years old. The older boy would seem to be about 10 or 11 and his sister perhaps about 9. The boy with the tunic seems to be about 7 or 8 years old.
The youngest boy wears what looks like a white tunic with a rather masculine looking belt and carrying what looks like an empty beer mug. I think this child is probably a boy, but the photo is ambiguous. The clothing styles are very distinctive and perhaps a bit unusual, even for
this early period. They suggest the mother had ratherca whimsical sence. Note that the children all wear very high leather boots that come up almost to mid-calf. The older boy's boots lace up while the
younger children have button closings on their boots. The older boy is dressed in a juvenile version of a city gentleman's suit. He wears an open jacket with what look like quilted vertical stripes over a vest of the same quilted material (with the stripes going horizontally across his chest). He
wears a rounded white collar that extends over his jacket with a large floppy
silk bow tie. He carries an elegant walking stick. His trousers are rather
short knee pants with four ornamental buttons near the hem. These he wears
with long black woolen stockings. He is hatless. His sister wears a tam over
her short-cut bangs and a sleevless dress of patterned material that appears
to be trimmed with lace. At least the patterning around the neck, arms and
the bottom of the skirt is lacey in design. She seems to be wearing calf-
length woolen socks under her boots with bare legs. The younger boy with the
white tunic also has bare arms and legs. He wears white socks with a stripe
around the top under his boots and a wide-brimmed straw hat sitting far back
on his head. All the children have short haircuts, which makes me think that
the photo is no older than turn-of-the-century Germany.
