Short pants in the Netherlands appeard after the turn of the 20th century and became increasingly common in the 1910s. We are not sure what the major influence were here. The Scouts whuch by the 1910s had become a popular group and were probanly an important influence. Most Dutch boys wore short pants from the 1920s through the 1950s. The original short pants were as long as kneepants. Some shorter styles were worn by younger boys, we believe beginning in the 1920s. Certainly some younger French boys were wearing shorter shorts at this time, we believe the same occurred in the Netherlands. Most boys, however, wore longer shorts. In the 1960s shorts became shorter and boys upto 13-14 kept wearing them, some also in the winter months. In the 1970s boys upto 12-13 were still wearing shorts. In the 1980s the wearing of shorts became more and more something for boys in elementary school and in vacations. In the 1990s short shorts became rare and almost all young boys wear longer shorts.
HBC has not yet noted Dutch boys wearing short pants in the 1890s. We have noted very young English boys wearing shorts before the turn of the century, but we have not noted Dutch boys wearing shorts. This may be due to our lack of information at this stage.

Most older boys, however, wore longer shorts, although by the end of the decade theybwere above the knee. Another example is younger teenager wearing a short pants suit with long stockings.
