Dutch Boys' Clothes: Smocks--20th Century

Figure 1.--This image from a 1992 Dutch sewing magazine illustrates smocks that mothers could sew. Notice the Scandinavian Lapp influence as well as the Russian blouse styling.

Some images from the turn of the 20th century do show Dutch boys wearing pinafore-like smocks. It was much more common for girls to wear them, but Dutch boys also wore them. Smocks were common in rural areas until about the mid-1930s--especially the traditional style. Yonger boys in urban areas might wear a wide variety of smocks. Some had Scandinavian Lap styling. Others had Russian blouse styling. In many cases smocks were made by mothers rather than purchased in stores. Many mother through the 1950s made their children's clothing, especially when they were young. Smocks declined in popularity in the 1940s and especially the 1950s. By the late 1950s they were only being worn by younger boys.

The 1920s

Dutch sewing magazines offered a wide variety in the 1920s offered a wide vaeiety of smock patterns to mothers sewing their childrens' clothes. Not only were the styles different, but so were the button closures. Some appear to have had draw strings. These appear to have been primarily for pre-school boys. These are quite different from the traditional smocks that older Dutch boys commonly wore in the late 19th century ad were still seen in rural areas in the 1920s.

The 1950s

HBC has only limited information on the smocks worn by Dutch boys during the 1950s. We have noted younger Dutch boys wearing simple pinafore or garden type smocks during the 1950s. They also wore smocks with matcjing romper suits. These appear to me mostly smocks for home wear rather than school smocks as worn in Belgiym and France. In general they appear to have been worn by pre=school children.
