Dutch Sailor Suits: Chronology--The 19th Century

Dutch sailor suits
Figure 1.--Here we see a CDV of an unidentified Sutch boy wearibg a white sailor suit with an unusual singl strip and horizontal striped dickey. Thecdealer siggests that it was taken in the 1859s. e think that is unlikely, it looks more like the 1890s to us, oerhaps the klate-80s. The CDV persisted in Europe longer than in Ameruica. The suit has knicker pants and black long stiockings. The studio was J.J.Hoekstra in Driebergen.

We have very limited information on 19th century Dutch clothing. Our Dutch archive is limited, especially for the 19th centuty. The Netherlands was a relatively wealthy country, a factor in photograohy, but the Netherlands is a relatively small country meaning the photographic record is rather limited. We do, have. however, a few 19th century images of Dutch boys wearing sailor suits. Queen Victoria introduced the sailor suit as a boys' outfit (1840s). We believe tahtbby the 1859s we begin to see Dutuch boys wearing them, but we have very little information documenting this. More infomation becomes available with the advent of the CDV (1860s). We believe that the sailor suit was a popular outfit for boys by the late-19th century and girls also wore sailor outfits. e note a boy who looks tio be about 10 years old wearing a traditionlly styled uniform with a horiuzonlaly syled dickey, we think in the 1880s.

The 1860s

The 1880s

We do not know yet when the sailor suit was first worn by Dutch boys or when it first became a popular style. The Netherlands had an important maritime tradition and thus sailor suits would seem to have been a natural style to beomne popular s soon as they began to be worn in Britain. Our 19th century Dutch archive is very limited. We suspect it was similar to trends in Germany. The sailor suit does appear to have been widely worn by Dutch boys the 1880s. We do not notice any destinctive features of Dutch sailor suits. Shoulder patches may help identify some. We do not see the white string ties that were popular with German sailor suits, probably reflecting naval uniform styles. We notice striped dickies, but are unsure how common this was. We notice the standard three-stripe styling. Sailor suits were normally worn with knee pants or knickers worn with long stockings.
