Russian Boys' Pants: Knickers

Figure 1.--This knickers outfit was shown in the 1975 issue "The Children Clothes Fashions". Knickers were reportedly worn during the spring and fall in the Soviet Union as late as the 1970s.

Knickers do not appar to have been as common in Ruissia as in America and Western Europe. We have, however, very limited information on knickers in Russia, especialy in the late 19th century. We have too few images and inadequate information on knickers in Russia to make any firm statements, especially on 19th century trends. We do not recall seeing many Russian boys wearing knickers in images that we have noted from the Soviet Union. Often older European boys wore knickers rather than short pants in the 1920s and 30s. I do not know if this was the case in the early Soviet era. While knickers do not appear to have as common in Russia as in the West, we do notice them being worn even into the 1970s. They do not appear to have been very popular. They were, however featured in Russian fashion magazines. Knickers in the 1960s and 70s were reportedly worn seasonally. A Russian reader tells us, "Knickers were worn in 1960s and early 1970s in Russian cities--usually in spring and autumn. I'm notvsure what materials were used. Corduroy was a popular material in America. I'm not sure if this was the case in Russia. They were especially popular for boys up to about 11 years of age that mothers apparently considered too young for long pants." We have no noted Russian boys wearing knickers since the 1980s.

Figure 2.--This photograph was taken at the All-Union Exhibition, Moscow, 1980. Thevboy wears knickers and kneesovks. He is clearly from a provincial city, because his clothes look slightly old fashioned for that time in Moscow.
