German School Clothes:  First Day--??? Meerkoff (about 1928)

Figure 1.--I think this first day snapshot dates from the later 1920s. I think it was dated 1927 or 1928. Unfortunately the boy is unidentified. The boy looks to be at least 6 years old--possibly nearer to 7 years old. I'm wondering if the name "Meerkoff" on the door plate represents his family name. And we do not know where in Germany the boy lived. It is interesting for a number of clothing features illustrated. Image courtesy of the BP Collection.

He wears a dark flatcap, probably navy blue, perhap chosen to match the color of the boy's school. The flat cap is a popular style in the 1920s. He wears a sailor suit. It is a short pants suits with dark short pants, a dark dickey, and anchor emblem on the sleeve. The boy appears (apparently in front of his own front door) with the cone of goodies for first day boys in primary school and a rather large book bag on his back and the leather lunch satchel slung over his shoulders. Notice the beige or light tan long stockings (obviously held up neatly by a Leibchen with garters attached) and the serviceable low-cut leather shoes. The long stockings seem to be heavy cotton, possibly mixed with a bit of wool for additional warmth. The color of the stockings nicely illustrates the popular shift from black to light tan or beige in the 1920s--especially towards the end of the decade. The low cut shoes makes me think that the photograph is fairly late 1920s or even perhaps early 1930s, because hightop shoes were more common during the 1920s.
