Geman School Clothes:  First Day--Unidentified Boy, 1931

Figure 1.--This German boy in 1931 wears a destinctive German cap, asweter, short pants, and white stockings. This looks to be normal scghoolwear, at the time--perhaps for a boy from a working-class family. Note the rabbit in his gift cone ("Zckertute").

We do not have this German boy's name. Thanks to a slate we know his first day of school was in 1931. This boy wears a cap. It is a destinctive German cap style, but I do not know what it was called in Germany. He also wears a sweater, very long short pants, and white stockings with high-top shoes. Note that the sweater has a kind of dickey, an artifact of the once popular sailor suit worn by German boys. His parents do not seem to have dressed him up much for his first day at school. This looks to be normal scghoolwear, at the time--perhaps for a boy from a working-class family. His Zuckertute was crowned by a toy rabbit. This boy appears to have done quite well on his first day of school. He has a good sized Zuckertute as well as a second Zuckertute on the chair behind him. I assume that it is for him also.
