German School Clothes:  First Day--Unidentified Boy, early 1930s

Figure 1.--This German boy in 1931 wears a kind of flat cap, a style similar to those worn in America at the time. In the early 30s it would have been seen as rather stylish in Germany at the time. Note the cloth hanging from his satchel. He holds his gift cone ("Zckertute").

This is another unidentified image which we believe was taken in the early 1930s. He wears For some reason this boy kept his overcoat on for his portrait. It is similar to a British gabardine school raincoat. He wears a book satchel and some kind of cloth tied to it. I'm not sure what that was for--perhaps it is to clean his school slate which is presumably inside the book satchel. A reader writes, "Rregarding the cloth hanging from the satchels I would agree with you that this is probably for 'wiping the slate clean. I have other German images that show the cloth too." While we can not see what kinds of clothes he is wearing under his coat, he wears short pants, kneesocks with paterened tops, and high-top shoes.
